The Festival’s Unique Approach

Jim Sakrison, a board member of North Park Main Street, explains the festival’s innovative approach. “Our goal is to promote commerce and business in the district,” he says. “By moving beyond a fenced-off area, we encourage attendees to explore multiple businesses, enjoy different cuisines, and experience the full spectrum of what North Park has to offer.”

This year’s festival will feature a hybrid model, combining a central outdoor stage at the North Park Plaza with performances at 10 to 12 venues throughout the district. “Each year is a little bit different,” Sakrison notes. “This year, we’re excited to activate the public space behind the Observatory with a stage, in addition to the diverse venue performances.”

Diverse Venues, Diverse Sounds

With about 30 acts scheduled to perform, the festival promises a rich tapestry of musical genres. From the psychedelic soul of Brainstory to the pop-country of Elizabeth Bowersox, and the hip-hop beats of Cut Chemist, there’s something for every music enthusiast. The headliners, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, will bring the house down with their straight-ahead rock performance.

In addition to the paid performances, several free shows will take place at venues like the Pure Pawsh pet store, the Overload skateboard shop, and the Bacari Mediterranean-style restaurant. These free performances provide an excellent opportunity for attendees to enjoy the festival without a ticket.

Connecting with the Community

The festival is not just about music; it’s about connecting with the community. The Walkabout app is hosting a green room-type experience at Union Cowork to serve as a home base for festivalgoers. More than a dozen performers are giving free shows during the event. One such artist is Jesus Gonzalez, a San Diego native whose music incorporates elements of peaceful soul, cosmic psychedelia, and spoken word poetry. Gonzalez is the only artist performing twice that day, first at Pretzels and Pints restaurant and later for VIPs at the Granada House art and music events venue.

Gonzalez expresses his excitement about the festival, saying, “It’s a testament to how incredible our community is. The Music Fest demonstrates the strength and diversity of San Diego’s music community.” He looks forward to seeing performances by Gypsy Sally, Ohmega Watts, and Gaslamp Killer, among others.

Tickets for the festival are priced at $25 for general admission through June 5 and $35 on the day of the event. VIP tickets are available for $65 through June 5 and $75 on the day. Free options include performances at the community stage at North Park Mini Park and various other venues.
