The Berkeley Animal Care Services facility at 1 Bolivar Drive faced an unexpected challenge on Sunday morning. An overnight fire broke out, prompting the temporary closure of the shelter located near Aquatic Park. The incident, though contained, left a trail of smoke damage and water from the sprinkler system.
The blaze, which started in a pile of donated pet supplies under a central stairway, was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. However, the aftermath left the lobby area with visible smoke damage and a lingering smell. The fire did not reach the animal holding areas, thanks to the heavy fire doors that kept most of the smoke at bay.
The Immediate Aftermath and Response
Kris Swanson, a representative from Berkeley Animal Care Services, reassured volunteers in an email sent at 1:50 a.m. Sunday that all animals were safe. The email stated, “The heavy fire doors prevented most of the smoke from entering the animal holding areas.” Swanson further mentioned that staff had checked on all animals, and they seemed fine, but would continue to monitor them closely.
Peter Radu, manager of Berkeley’s neighborhood services division, spoke to Berkeleyside about the city’s efforts to clear the shelter of debris and deal with the immediate aftermath. Workers were seen wearing masks to protect themselves from the smoke. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with the Berkeley Fire Department yet to provide a definitive answer.
The Road to Recovery
Radu expressed optimism about the shelter’s reopening, expecting it to resume operations by Monday. The fire, though destructive to pet supplies like dog beds, blankets, food bags, and leashes, did not cause any harm to the animals. Swanson emphasized the luck they had, stating, “We were very lucky.” The animals will remain on-site, with staff ensuring their care and well-being.
The Berkeley Fire Department’s quick response was highlighted by Swanson, who noted that firefighters arrived promptly after the sprinkler system activated. Despite the damage, the swift actions taken by the authorities and staff ensured the safety of the animals, which remains the top priority.
