A massive fire erupted at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights on Wednesday, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the sky and prompting a shelter-in-place order due to a hazardous ammonia leak.
The blaze began around 2:35 p.m. at the 1400 S. Los Palos St. facility, which spans approximately 1,000 feet by 500 feet and features solar panels on its roof. The fire quickly reached an ammonia linecausing it to off-gas and forcing firefighters to retreat.
The Fire’s Impact and Safety Measures
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) issued urgent instructions for residents to get inside immediately and close all windows and doors. They also advised turning off air conditioning and heating systems to prevent the ammonia from entering homes.
LAFD Chief Jaime Moore assured the public that the ammonia is not toxic unless individuals have respiratory issues or come into direct contact with it. However, adjacent structures were evacuated to prevent people from inhaling the ammonia in the air. Firefighters shifted their strategy to using water drops from helicopters to combat the flames spreading across the building’s rooftop solar panels.
The shelter-in-place order affected the area south of Interstate 5east of Soto Streetnorth of Washington Boulevardand west of Indiana Street. As of 5:30 p.m.officials were unsure when the order would be lifted.
Community Response and Precautions
East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice urged people outside the shelter-in-place boundaries to take precautions, noting that the 5 Freeway is not an air filter and that the smoke was spreading. By 4 p.m.authorities issued a smoke advisory covering East LACommerceand parts of downtown.
Over 120 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. Air quality was being monitored, and authorities planned to use an LAFD robot to assess the building’s interior. The facility is owned by Lineage Logisticsa company that offers cold storage services.
Local organizations such as Neighborhood MusicCentro CSOand Plaza de la Raza canceled or moved classes and meetings online. District 14 Councilmember Ysabel Jurado and Mayor Karen Bass urged residents to follow the shelter-in-place order and stay indoors.
Historical Context and Environmental Concerns
The Boyle Heights warehouse was the site of a smaller fire in 2026. In 2026Lineage Logistics was fined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for violating safety regulations at a facility in Iowa. The current fire has raised concerns about the potential health risks posed by the ammonia leak.
Jane Williamsexecutive director of California Communities Against Toxicsexpressed concerns that officials were underplaying the risk. She noted that the facility contains massive amounts of ammonia and that a similar incident in a more affluent area would likely result in evacuations rather than a shelter-in-place order.
The fire has highlighted the challenges of combating large-scale industrial fires in densely populated urban areas. The use of water-dropping helicopters, typically reserved for wildfires, underscores the uniqueness of this situation.
