Altus Schools’ Vision for AI in Education
Altus Schools, known for its alternative education model, has long focused on helping students who have fallen behind. Cathryn Rambo, dean of academic studies at Altus, expressed enthusiasm about the pilot program. “We are thrilled to be the first school in the world researching the use of physical AI as a teaching partner,” she stated. The First Interaction: A Clunky Start
During a demonstration, the robot interacted with middle school students to discuss the inventions of Nikola Tesla. The interaction was described as “clunky,” with the robot interrupting the students and speaking too quickly. Despite the initial challenges, Rambo sees this as part of the learning process. “We didn’t even know in the first six weeks what Ameca can do, and we still don’t know all the different possibilities,” she admitted.

Not everyone is convinced about the benefits of AI robots in education. Wayne Holmes, a professor of critical studies of artificial intelligence and education at University College London, criticized the initiative. “The suggestion that this could ever be within a million miles of the capabilities of a human teacher is criminal,” he said. Holmes argued that AI robots are a “parody of education” and lack the evidence to support their effectiveness.
Neil Selwyn, a professor at Monash University, echoed these concerns. He pointed out that AI technologies often create more work for teachers rather than making their lives easier. Selwyn also criticized the use of humanoid robots, calling it a “show, a charade, a spectacle.” He emphasized that physical robots cannot replicate the sentience and emotional intelligence of a human teacher.
