The Eastern Pacific is witnessing a flurry of tropical activity as Tropical Storm Fausto has rapidly intensified into the season’s first hurricane. Meanwhile, the remnants of Tropical Storm Elida are causing life-threatening rip currents along the coast of Southern California. Fausto’s Rapid Intensification and Projected Path
Hurricane Fausto achieved hurricane status on Monday night, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. Located approximately 785 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, Fausto is expected to move into a more favorable environment for further strengthening through midweek before encountering conditions that will gradually weaken it.
The storm is projected to track northwest over the next several days, potentially approaching Hawaii in eight to ten days. Forecasters predict Fausto could reach Category 2 status by Wednesday, with maximum sustained winds peaking at 110 mph before it begins to weaken over cooler waters and in a drier, more stable environment.
Elida’s Transition and Coastal Impacts
Although Tropical Storm Elida transitioned to a post-tropical system on Monday morning as it moved north over cooler waters, its remnants continue to pose significant hazards. The NHC has warned of life-threatening rip currents affecting parts of Southern California in the coming days. Additionally, the storm’s remnants could bring rain to the region.
So far this season, the Eastern Pacific basin has produced six named storms: Amanda, Boris, Cristina, Douglas, Elida, and now Fausto. Notably, all these storms formed ahead of their average climatological formation dates, underscoring the early and active nature of this hurricane season.
