The San Diego County Public Health Department is currently investigating an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis a parasitic infection commonly known as crypto linked to the swimming pools at the Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center in Chula Vista. The investigation covers exposures that occurred between July 24 and August 15 and officials are urging anyone who swam at the resort during this period to be aware of potential symptoms.
The Cryptosporidium parasite is notorious for its resilience, capable of surviving in properly maintained pools. This characteristic makes it a significant challenge for public health officials. Brynn Taylor a family medicine physician with Kaiser Permanente emphasized that even well-maintained pools can become sources of spread due to the parasite’s resistance to chlorine.
Understanding the Cryptosporidium Parasite
The Cryptosporidium parasite is responsible for approximately 800,000 cases of cryptosporidiosis in the United States each year. The most common symptom is watery diarrhea which typically appears within 2 to 10 days of exposure. Dr. Taylor noted that the onset of symptoms can vary, but the acute nature of the illness is a key indicator.
One of the most concerning aspects of this parasite is its ability to spread even after symptoms have resolved. Dr. Taylor explained that individuals can continue to shed the parasite’s oocytes, making them unwitting carriers of the infection. This prolonged shedding period complicates efforts to contain the spread of the parasite.
Challenges in Containing the Outbreak
Containing the spread of cryptosporidiosis presents unique challenges due to the parasite’s resilience. Standard disinfectants, such as alcohol-based hand sanitizers and bleach, are not effective against Cryptosporidium. Dr. Taylor recommended using soap and water for handwashing and a mixture of hydrogen peroxide for surface cleaning to better eradicate the parasite.
Most healthy individuals recover from cryptosporidiosis without medical intervention. However, the illness can be more severe for those with weakened immune systems. Some individuals may not experience any symptoms at all, further complicating efforts to track and contain the outbreak.
