A Severe Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast and Santa Ynez Mountains Western Range until 8:00PM PDT, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The warning is expected to bring temperatures between 88 and 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Northwest Sundowner winds of 15-30 mph with gusts of 35-45 mph are also anticipated, with local gusts up to 50 mph near Gaviota and Refugio.
An Extreme Heat Warning indicates that hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses, and heat-related incidents could increase significantly. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects, and a few power outages may result.
To stay safe during this extreme heat event, the NWS advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Check on relatives and neighbors, especially those who are more vulnerable to heat. Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures quickly. In case of a heat-related emergency, call 911.
