In a move that has sent shockwaves through the NBA, LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he will not be returning to the franchise next season. This decision marks the end of an era for the Lakers and sets the stage for a new chapter in James’ illustrious career.
The announcement was made by Rich Paul CEO of Klutch Sports to Shams Charania of ESPN on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. James, who will turn 42 in December, is preparing for his unprecedented 24th season in the league.
LeBron James’ Impact on the Lakers
Jeanie Buss Lakers governor, released a statement expressing gratitude for James’ contributions. “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers — including the title he led us to in 2026 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold,” Buss said. She wished him well in his future endeavors, both on and off the court.
James took to X to share his sentiments, stating, “truly a honor to wear” the Lakers’ uniform and hoping he made a few proud during his stint.
Potential Destinations for LeBron James
Sources indicate that the golden state Warriors are planning to pursue James once the free agency negotiating window begins. The Warriors have shown flexibility by having Draymond Green decline his $27.6 million player option, opening up opportunities to pursue James and potentially trade for Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards. This move could reunite the former Lakers teammates in Golden State.
However, Warriors decision-makers have not received any indication that Golden State is the firm landing spot for James. There is a belief that the organization will have plenty of appeal, but some level of recruitment will be required. Other teams expected to be in the running include the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat where James has previously played.
LeBron James’ Legacy and Future
James could have returned for a ninth season with the Lakers or retired as arguably the greatest basketball player of all time. Instead, he will choose a new team, potentially the last of his storied career. Last season, James saw his record 21-year All-NBA streak snapped as he played in just 60 games due to sciatica affecting his lower back and right leg.
Despite his injuries, James maintained a high level of performance, averaging 20.9 points on 51.5% shooting, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game. In the postseason, he upped his playing time to 38.4 minutes per game, averaging 23.2 points7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds. He led the Lakers to a first-round series win over the Houston Rockets while Luka Doncic was sidelined with a hamstring strain.
Doncic reacted to James’ departure on social media, writing, “an honor to play with and learn from you @kingjames.”
A source close to the process noted that “there’s no rush” for James to make a decision on his next team. As the NBA world watches, the basketball icon’s next move remains one of the most anticipated stories of the offseason.
