The Orange county Transportation Authority (OCTA) has taken a significant step to ensure the mobility and independence of older adults by extending its Senior Mobility Program agreements through June 30, 2031. This program, funded by Measure M provides essential transportation services to seniors across Orange County, helping them maintain their quality of life and community connections.

On June 23, 2026, the OCTA Board of Directors approved a five-year extension of cooperative agreements with 32 cities and three nonprofit organizations. This decision underscores OCTA’s commitment to supporting the mobility needs of Orange County’s senior population.

Ensuring Independence and Community Connection

The Senior Mobility Program is designed to help older adults access essential destinations such as medical appointments, grocery stores, senior centers, and social activities. By providing tailored transportation options, the program enables seniors to remain active and engaged in their communities. OCTA Chair Jamey M. Federico emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “The Senior Mobility Program is a lifeline for many older adults across Orange County.”

Through this program, seniors can access employment opportunities, stay connected with family and friends, and participate in recreational activities. The extended agreements ensure that these vital services will continue to be available, reflecting OCTA’s dedication to improving the lives of all Orange County residents.

Funding and Service Delivery

The Senior Mobility Program is funded through Measure M, Orange County’s half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements. Under the city-based program model, OCTA distributes funding to participating cities based on their population of residents age 60 and older. Cities use these funds, along with a required local funding match, to operate transportation services specifically designed for seniors.

In addition to city-operated services, OCTA supports transportation programs run by three nonprofit organizations: Abrazar Inc. the Korean American Senior Association of Orange County and Southland Integrated Services, Inc.. These organizations provide transportation across multiple jurisdictions, helping to fill service gaps where options may otherwise be limited.

During the fiscal year 2026-25, the three nonprofit agencies provided nearly 12,500 trips. In total, the Senior Mobility Program facilitated more than 286,000 trips during that period and has provided nearly 3.5 million trips across Orange County since its inception.

Looking Ahead

With the extension of these agreements, OCTA is poised to continue supporting the mobility needs of Orange County’s senior population through 2031. The Senior Mobility Program is just one of several initiatives funded through Measure M that aim to enhance the transportation options available to residents. By investing in these programs, OCTA is helping to build a more inclusive and accessible community for all.
