The joyous atmosphere of a championship celebration turned into a nightmare for Marie Marseille and her family on Saturday night. As they celebrated the New York Knicks’ historic NBA victory, a police-involved incident resulted in the death of their beloved pet, Jamison, a Golden Saint Berdoodle.
The incident unfolded at the Jordan Condominiums in Canoga Park, specifically at 7551 Jordan Avenue. What began as a night of celebration quickly escalated into a tragic event that has left the community in shock and the family grieving.
Neighbor’s call leads to police response
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a call at approximately 8:55 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2026. The call reported a screaming woman and a possible domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they encountered Marie Marseille, who was alone and celebrating the Knicks’ championship with her family.
Marseille, a nurse originally from New York, had been watching the Knicks’ victory celebration with her family. Her dog, Jamison, was even dressed for the occasion, wearing a Knicks jersey. The officers asked Marseille to secure the dog, but Jamison slipped outside and approached one of the officers.
The fatal encounter
According to Marseille, Jamison was not displaying any aggressive behavior. He was not barking, growling, or baring his teeth. However, the situation escalated quickly. “The next thing I know, Jamison is lying on the ground,” Marseille recounted. The LAPD’s preliminary report stated that the dog charged at one of the officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.
The LA Department of Animal Services responded to the scene and took custody of Jamison, who died at the location. The incident has sparked outrage among neighbors and the community, with many questioning the necessity and appropriateness of the officer’s actions.
Community reacts to the tragedy
Cellphone video captured the emotional aftermath of the incident, showing Marseille sobbing over her pet. The video, which has been viewed over two million timeshas drawn an outpouring of anger and sadness from neighbors who knew Jamison. One neighbor was heard saying, “What is the purpose of all of you? This is what we pay for?!”.
Marseille expressed her disbelief and grief, stating, “He’s my baby. It doesn’t make any sense to me. I can’t make sense of anything.”. The incident has left the community in mourning, with a memorial growing in the hallway where neighbors watched Jamison die.
Raymon Alvarez, a neighbor who lives across the street, described hearing the screaming and later, the gunfire. “The screaming I heard was like, ‘Ah! Oh my God! Oh my God!’ Like just, pure screaming,” Alvarez said. He initially did not recognize the sounds as gunshots due to the area’s usual lack of gun violence.
The circumstances leading up to the police shooting are currently under review. The neighbor who called 911 expressed feelings of guilt, sincerely believing their neighbor was in trouble.
