The Chico Branch of the Butte County Library became the scene of a tragic incident on Monday evening, as a shooting left two adults dead and a child injured. The Chico Police Department responded swiftly to the active shooter situation apprehending the suspect and securing the area.

The Chico Police Department received a distressing 911 call at 5:12 p.m., capturing the harrowing sounds of gunshots and screaming from within the library. Police Chief Billy Aldridge provided details during an evening news conference, describing the chaotic scene that unfolded.

The Incident and Immediate Response

As officers arrived at the scene, they formed an entry team and entered the library. The suspect attempted to flee through the back of the building but was quickly apprehended by officers who had established a perimeter outside. The suspect used a single firearm, and no shots were exchanged between the shooter and the responding officers.

A video captured by a civilian showed police handcuffing a person lying on the ground in a grassy area outside the library. The streets surrounding the scene at Sherman Avenue and East 3rd Street remained closed late into the night, with the public urged to stay away while the investigation continued.

The Victims and Ongoing Investigation

The victims’ identities were withheld pending notification of their next of kin, with the information expected to be released on Tuesday morning. The child injured in the shooting was taken to Enloe Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Family reunification efforts were underway at Chico First Assembly of God Church.

The Chico Police Detectives are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, collaborating with local, state, and federal partners. As of now, there is no known motive, and it is believed the shooter acted alone. The identities of the victims and the suspect have not been released.

The shooting has left the community in shock and mourning. Police Chief Billy Aldridge expressed his condolences, stating, “This evening was obviously very sad, traumatic for a lot of people, very traumatic for our community. My heart and prayers go out to the families of those involved.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a statement, saying, “Our hearts are with the Chico community tonight. We are grateful to law enforcement for their swift actions to secure the scene and take the suspect into custody. No family should have to endure a tragedy like this.”

All Butte County Library branches will remain closed on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating event.
