On the evening of Monday, around 8:45 p.m., the San diego county Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an assault involving a firearm at the Ramona Vista Military Housing Complex on 11th Street. Upon arrival, deputies found Proffitt waiting on the steps of the residence and detained him without incident.
Inside the home, deputies discovered two adult victims, an adult female and an adult male, both suffering from traumatic injuries. Tragically, both individuals died at the scene. The identities of the victims have not been released, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
A Friend’s Perspective
Shawn Mattson, who knew Proffitt from their high school days, expressed his shock and disgust upon hearing the news. Mattson recalled Proffitt as a kind and outgoing individual, a stark contrast to the actions he is accused of.
“In high school, he honestly was a really nice guy. He was very, kind of, upbeat and outgoing. And (when I saw him again), he seemed very similar to how he did back then,” Mattson shared. He last spoke with Proffitt approximately two years ago but remembered him fondly.
Mattson also revealed that he learned of a complex relationship dynamic involving Proffitt and the victims. According to Mattson, Proffitt was dating the female victim, who may have also been in a relationship with the male victim. However, these details have not been confirmed by the authorities.

Proffitt, now 33 years old and residing in Escondido, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder. He has been booked into the San Diego Central Jail and is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the East County Superior Court.
