The San Francisco District Attorney’s office announced that Lisa Gonzales, 55, has been sentenced to 31 years to life in prison for the murder and dismemberment of her former roommate, Margaret Mamer, 61. The crime took place in their shared home in the Mission District in 2018.
The case, which sent shockwaves through the community, involved a complex web of tensions and a gruesome discovery that left neighbors and friends in disbelief.
The Tensions That Led to Tragedy
Court records reveal that Gonzales, who was the master tenant of the residence on the 200 block of 14th Street, had repeatedly demanded that Mamer move out. Despite being offered legal avenues for eviction, Gonzales reportedly said, “No thanks, I’ll do it my way.”
The situation escalated when Mamer was reported missing on June 1, 2018 after friends grew concerned about her sudden disappearance. When questioned by the third roommate, Gonzales made a chilling remark: “she left, but not the way she wanted to.”
The Discovery and Investigation
The next day, a concerned citizen alerted the San francisco police Department to the possibility of a murder. Police arrived at the Mission District home and questioned Gonzales, who claimed that Mamer had moved to Eureka two weeks prior.
A subsequent search of the home uncovered Mamer’s body in a blue plastic container in the basement. Investigators found Mamer’s blood spattered throughout Gonzales’ bathroom, despite attempts to clean it with bleach. The autopsy revealed that Mamer had suffered multiple sharp force injuries to the face, head, and chest, and that her death could have occurred anytime between May 13 and June 2.

Gonzales was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 31 years to life in prison. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated, “The court’s sentence will ensure that Ms. Gonzales is held accountable for this heinous crime.”
Jenkins also expressed gratitude to the victim’s family and friends, acknowledging the long wait for justice. “While the victim’s family and friends had to wait far too long for this day to come, we are grateful for their trust in our office and the team on this case to deliver justice.”
